Light/shadow effect on 2D board?

The middle of the board seems weird...
Is there something wrong with my display? Am I losing my vision?
Is it real? Can I turn it off?
It's for KoTH games to signify the centre of the board where you should aim to place your king.
Oh yeah, I was playing KoTH...

I have to say, I like KoTH but I really don't like that shadowy highlight effect.

How about just a slight and clean discoloration of the the middle squares?

Also pretty sure people would know where to go even without it.

Tried that, very distracting.

No they won't. Lots of people don't even know the rules of chess properly yet decide to play it. I'm sure that there are plenty more who don't know the rules of KoTH yet want to play it. The 'mound' shape given to the centre of the board is intended as a subtle reminder.
Well, it's distracting as it is. Just write the objective.
If they can't read they probably can't play chess either.
Or how about it would just highlight the squares in the beginning?
